I have been competing in cycling, kayaking, mountain biking and multisport races for the last seven years. It is a big part of my life and I love it. The people I’ve met, the training, getting prepared, racing itself, finishing and celebrations all make for some pretty awesome times.
My involvement started when I caught the ‘bug’ from my dad, John. As a seven year old I waited at the Coast to Coast finish line until he rolled in, (well past my bed time) at the end of the Longest Day. Fast forward a few years, it became clear that my ball handling skills were not going to get me far. So I decided to dabble in road riding, which added to my already pretty consistent running. I threw kayaking into the mix a few months later and set my sights on the 2007 Coast to Coast, Two Day Individual.
Since then I have completed the race two more times, as an individual in 2008 and in a Mixed Team with Richard in 2010. There is something about it which is quite addictive! Along the way I have done other races like Tuatara Peninsula, Teva Big Day at the Office, Brass Monkey, Le Race, Graperide and now that I think of it, lots more. I am motivated by the awesome attitudes of similarly addicted people, feeling a sense of achievement, and the amazing places I get to plod, pedal or paddle through.
Surprisingly enough, there is a life outside of training and planning the next mission. I am in my final year of my Bachelor of Recreation Management at Lincoln University. I also work part time at R & R Sport, who are great supporters of adventurous things.
I love sharing my experiences and knowledge with other people who are getting into anything endurance or multisport related. Many people have helped me over the years and I am very grateful for that. The friendliness and helpfulness of the people is one of the greatest and most unique things about being involved in this sport. I am so excited about the opportunity to pass on what I have learned so far and help others develop in whatever direction they hope to. It’s going to be fun!
