Technique Training – Paddling

Rosie Shakespeare will help you take your paddling to the next level by teaching you the correct technique to paddle faster and more efficiently.

Each session will be tailored to your needs based on your strengths and weaknesses so you can learn at your own speed.  Therefore below are just guidelines of what we cover and will change based on your previous experience and progress.

Session 1

To improve your paddling we must start by reviewing your boat and paddle set up as well as your posture in the boat.   The next step is to work on your balance and stability in your boat so you have a strong platform to produce a powerful paddle stroke.  Once we have got the basics organised we can then start to build the best possible paddle technique.  This starts with the set up. This is the part of the stroke focusing on your top hand coming through to the point before the paddle is about to enter the water. This aim of this is to get your body and therefore your blade in the correct position. If we do this correctly it will set the rest of your paddle stroke to be smooth, stable and powerful.

Session 2
After reviewing the previous session we may focus on the catch (when the blade first enters the water). If you have the set up sorted, then your muscles are in a powerful activated position to get a great catch.

Session 3
By emphasising the paddle technique as a full body action that starts at your toes, working through your torso to transfer the power onto your blade and into the water, we will aim to bring your stoke together into one fluid technique that will make your boat go faster while being more efficient.
