What is your background?
I grew up just outside of Methven on a farm, where I was lucky enough to have the outdoors on my doorstep. Spent my childhood riding bikes, hunting, fishing, skiing and snowboarding. But from age 9, I acquired the nickname of slug, because I was fat and slow and had a tendency to roll around on the ground like a slug. After leaving school I had the chance to work overseas for Full On, as a means to go climbing and see the world.

How did you get into multisport?
My P.E teacher and former coast to coast veteran James Roderick inspired me to get into running. I did my first race the notorious peak to pub at age 14. This was my first taste at multisport. Although I didn’t compete again until 2007 when I was working at Glendu Bay camping ground as a toilet cleaner and had a bit of extra time on my hands. So I thought I would give the two day coast a crack and end up placing 3rd.

Name 3 key results that you are most proud of
- 1st Teva 2008 - Because the year before I blew out in the paddle whilst in the lead but ended finishing 4th as I spent 10minutes on the bank cramping
- 1st Mission to Marlborough 2008 - Because it was my first three day stage race
- 2nd Anaconda National adventure race series 2011 - Because I put so much into training specifically for the series event, as well as teaching myself to swim in 3months.
|
What is your favourite race and why?
The Teva because its based around my home town and the trail run is one of the more challenging trail runs around NZ.
|
What is your favourite training food?
Coffee
|
What are the things that you find the most challenging about multisport?
Racing solo would be my biggest challenge. When you are out there on your own for extended periods of time and you’ve got to keep pushing it.
|
What do you do to relax when you are not training or racing?
Drink coffee, eat lots of food and hang out with the family
|
What are your goals for the season?
Top three one day coast to coast
