Bryan Tarbell asked to “slow down” by world champion

Posted on April 24, 2008

Bryan Tarbell lead the Around Brunner cycle race for a time in the weekend.  Shortly after the start the lead peleton missed a turn off and being at the back of this group Bryan was able to see what was going on and go the correct way.  Bryan then continued riding unaware that the gentleman’s agreement that he should stop and wait for those that missed the turn off.  Receiving some encouragement of “Go Bryan Go!” spurred him on.  It wasn’t until Hayden Godfrey (newly crowned World Champion) chased him down and asked him to slow down to wait for everybody that he relinquished his lead.  Well done Bryan – it is not everyday that you get a World Champion asking you “to slow down a bit”.

Around Brunner – Mission Complete

Posted on April 21, 2008

Congratulations to all those Complete Performance athletes that finished the 130km Around Brunner cycle event this weekend.  It was a fantastic weekend away and everybody did really well. Some results; Anita Paling-4:17, Nadine Voice-4:16 ,Graham Allfrey-3:50 , Leighton and Rebekah Greer-4:18, Karen Kelly- 4:40, Bryan Tarbell- 3:56, I did it in 3:30 and Graeme Allen (let’s not talk about his result – he has a very damaged ego…).  A special mention also needs to go out to Nadine Voice and Rebekah Greer who were both involved in a nasty crash that occurred just 4kms from the finish line.  Neither were seriously hurt but both set about helping others involved with Rebekah involved for over 20minutes helping Ambulance crew triage and pack people into Ambulances – well done.

The Grape ride

Posted on April 14, 2008

Complete Performance had a number of athletes taking part in the Grape ride that was held over the weekend.  They included Nadine Voice, Jarred Hedwig, David Shepherd, Lisa Morrison, Graeme Allfrey and Jacqui Hamilton on a tandem with her husband.  With tougher conditions than last year good times were always going to be difficult.  However Nadine finished 20 minutes faster than last year in a time of 3.14, as all the hard work continues to pay off.  Jarred also had a very good ride finishing in a time of 2.58. David had a tough day out subsequently not finishing as well as he might want to after battling a stomach bug all week, so as long as he looks after himself he should be ready for Around Brunner this weekend.

Mt Peel MTB marathon

Posted on April 14, 2008

After competing in the Mt Peel MTB marathon for a number of years Craig Phillips turned up last weekend determined to ride a personal best.  Being as fit as he has ever been he knew that if conditions were right he would have a good chance.  As it happened the morning broke to perfect conditions and subsequently all of the preparation that he put in before the event paid off as he rode his PB and finished fourth overall.  Congratulations Craig.

Congratulations to all LeRace finishers

Posted on April 2, 2008

Many Complete Performance affiliated athletes completed Lerace in the weekend and some excellent performances were the result of good preparation, tactics and of course the weather.  Mike Nuy achieved his goal of going under 3hours clocking in at 2.58 this was 20 minutes faster than last year (all the hard work is paying off). Graham Allfrey was also stoked with his performance achieving a personal best of 3.29 therefore going under the elusive 3.30 barrier.  Others to complete the race were Ed Barrett, Tim Raw and David Shepherd, who was on track for a PB until a crippling bout of cramp stopped him in his tracks, but it was still good preparation for his main goal of Around Brunner in four weeks time.

Goldrush race report

Posted on April 2, 2008

Complete Performance athletes Andreas Kacofegitiss, Jacqui Hamilton, Craig Phillips and Tim Raw completed the Central Otago Goldrush Multisport event last weekend.  Andreas teamed up with long time training partner Devon Burchett in the Tandem teams section which meant they raced the full 365km course side by side.  Both were well matched for speed and had some very good sections followed by a couple of tough moments which saw them finish in third place.  Jacqui teamed up to compete as a 3 person veteran team.  Her key stage that she had been focussing on in her training was the road bike leg followed by the run on the second day, and subsequently the effort that she put in meant she performed to her best and her teamed claimed a well deserved second place in their section.  Both Craig and Tim competed in the Veteran men section, traditionally this has been an extremely tough section to do well in as these guys know all the tricks in the book.  Tim was happy with his performance and enjoyed the weekend of hard racing as he looks to prepare for the duathlon nationals at the start of June.  His team claimed a creditable second place.  Craig’s team where defending champions going into the race and they wanted to keep it that way, therefore Craig focussed on this event as a top priority for his season.  Subsequently all of his hard work paid off with a team win and two extremely good performances placing second overall in his two key mountain bike stages.  Click here to read his race report
