Cycle skills course a success!!
Posted on March 15, 2008
The final cycle skills session concluded today with participants completing a bunch ride followed by some tips on how to sprint and win a race, the group then put these skills into practice with some short races. Setting off in groups of 3-4 based on ability and coming together in a sprint finish. My highlight of the day was beating Ed home in a sprint for 3rd place – I now regard my summer of racing as a success… And I am still claiming it even though he has the 140km Timaru leg of the Benchmark series tomorrow (a race that he won last year). Over the course of the three sessions participants also learnt about how to set up their bike, cleaning it, pedal technique, changing a tyre, balancing, cornering, climbing and descending. As a result of this success the course will definitely be run again in the future so watch this space.

Spot prize in his first event
Posted on March 13, 2008
Nathan Greer (aged 6 weeks) participated in his first event in the weekend completing the inaugural Mountain Buggy World Champs held in Hagley Park. He unlisted the help of Tarsh (his Mum) as his chief pusher and Richard (his Dad and Author) as number one cheerleader. There was a torrid start as buggies jostled for position but Nathan held his nerve slotting into a good position and proceeded to sleep for the rest of the journey. Luckily Tarsh took control and powered around the course (while not talking too much), with words of encouragement and directions (e.g. pass them on the inside, block them they are trying to pass on the right) from the chief cheerleader. A great day was had by all and Nathan walked away with 1 of 5 spot prizes given away on the day. It will be an interesting race next year when Nathan has some head control and the chief pusher and cheerleader swap roles to try and win a world championship…

Nadine Hangs up the wetsuit for the season with another PB
Posted on March 13, 2008
Nadine Voice hung up her wetsuit last weekend as the triathlon season drew to a close. She did it in style with yet another PB finishing a full 5 minutes quicker and improving her placing from 18th to 5th in the women’s field. This is impressive alone but even more so with the understanding that she went into this race tired with a long run under her belt as part of her preparation for Ironman NZ next year.
